Getting fans to move their feet with the best for YouTube FanFest

Challenge

YouTube FanFest is one of the Asia-Pacific’s largest music events that thousands of fans look forward to year after year. They get to see YouTube’s biggest stars and join their favourite creators and artists in events across different countries.

But like everything else in 2020, Covid made the year’s celebration isolating. While YouTube could not bring a physical show to its FanFest community of creators & fans, they launched its first ever digital premiere that involved 9 countries - a virtual party like never before with interactive experiences that made fans a part of the celebrations.

Approach

We created a seamless interactive dancing experience for YouTube FanFest 2020 with a web app that lets the user learn dance moves from renowned dancer and choreographer Matt Steffanina. Brought to life with the YouTube Fan Fest team and BitStudio, users would also be able to record, download and share the video with friends on social channels.

An AI technique called body segmentation cropped the fan out of their environment and placed them into the virtual environment alongside Matt, with the sticker-style art direction allowing for imperfect capture, cropping and a truly participative experience.
